Hit-and-Run Driver Strikes Pedestrian in Charlotte, North Carolina (NC)

May 18, 2020

CHARLOTTE, NC- Patch.com writes that a pedestrian suffered severe injuries in a crash in Charlotte this week. The driver involved in the crash then fled the scene leaving the victim on the road.*

The incident occurred in the late evening on University City Boulevard. Police found the man and stated that his injuries appeared to be from having been struck by a car. The vehicle involved had fled the scene. Reports indicate that the car that collided with the man was likely a dark-colored vehicle that could have sustained damage to its windshield and headlights.

Responders transported the man to the Atrium Health Center Main, where his condition was reported as critical. The day after the wreck, the man is still struggling with life-threatening injuries. A witness at the scene stated that the victim was crossing the left lane of the road when a driver went through the intersection and struck the man. It is not clear whether the light was green or red at the time.

Police did not release the victim's identity but stated that they would provide that information after they were in touch with the man's next of kin. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department posted a photo of the vehicle suspected of having been involved in the crash. Investigators are asking that anyone with information about the collision, the vehicle or the driver contact the police or call Crime Stoppers.

According to the AAA, about 65 percent of the victims in hit-and-run crashes are either pedestrians or cyclists. Sadly, the number of these crashes has increased each year since 2009. Fleeing the scene of a crash is illegal, and will greatly increase the penalties for the driver when that person is identified.
