Woman in North Carolina Facing DWI Charges in Relation to Tragic Crash that Killed Two Children

DURHAM, NC- Wsoctv.com writes that a tragic crash killed two children in North Carolina this week. The woman operating the vehicle is suspected of having been drunk when the incident took place. Police believe that the driver was also speeding when she lost control of the vehicle and collided with a brick column and a then a tree. Following the impact, the car caught fire.*

Two children were riding in the rear of the vehicle at the time. Reports indicate that the victims were a six-year-old boy and a five-year-old boy. The driver, identified as a 40-year-old woman, was severely injured in the crash. Police charged the woman for careless and reckless driving and driving while intoxicated. Additional charges will likely follow. 

Studies indicate that North Carolina has some of the deadliest roads in the nation. Only Texas, Florida, Georgia, and California have higher numbers of traffic accident fatalities than North Carolina. In 2017, 1,412 people died in crashes in the state. 

One of the main causes of these wrecks is drunk driving. In North Carolina, about one-third of traffic deaths are caused by alcohol-impaired motorists. 

Nationally, drunk drivers kill around 30 people every day, meaning that a drunk driver kills one person on average every 50 minutes. Each year over 10,000 people lose their lives in drunk driving collisions. In 2018, 29 percent of traffic deaths were caused by drunk motorists. The risk of being involved in a collision rises dramatically when a driver’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) reaches .08 percent alcohol per volume. Driving with a BAC of .08 percent or more is illegal in every state.
