Crash Involving Semi Injures One in Charlotte, North Carolina (NC)
CHARLOTTE, NC- Wbtv.com writes that a person was injured in a collision on Interstate 485 this week during the late morning. The crash occurred in Charlotte close to Mount Holly-Huntersville Road. Police stated that a previous crash had led to slow traffic and the closure of all but one lane.*
Reports indicate that a large truck and a car were stopped due to the congestion on the road. A van approaching the vehicles failed to slow down in time and struck the back of the car. The car was then pushed into the large truck. A person in the passenger car suffered severe injuries and was transported to the hospital via airlift. Reports did not include the nature of that person’s injuries or release their condition. Early reports stated that a person had died in the wreck, but that information was not accurate, and the Highway Patrol provided updated corrections to the media. None of the identities of any of those involved have been released at this time. Police expect that they will be filing charges in relation to the incident, but have not provided any other information about the nature of those charges.
New technology has been developed to reduce the number of rear-end crashes. Forward collision warning systems are able to provide drivers with alerts when their vehicle is approaching another car or object. Studies indicate that these systems are capable of reducing the number of rear-end collisions by about 27 percent. Consumer Reports states that they believe that because these systems are capable of saving lives, they should now come standard in all new vehicles. Currently, these features are available in most new models but do not come standard with all trim levels.
