Tragic Crash Kills One in Durham, North Carolina (NC)

DURHAM, NC- Wral.com writes that a collision occurred in Durham that left one person dead. The tragic wreck took place in the late morning this week on US Highway 15-501 North.*

According to investigators, a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze was heading northbound on the highway close to West Cornwallis Road when it collided with a 2015 Nissan Sentra. The impact caused the Sentra to drift off the roadway where it collided with a guardrail and then struck a tree. The victim of the crash was the driver of the Sentra, who was identified as a 34-year-old man from Durham. Reports indicate that the man was declared dead at the crash scene. The incident is still under investigation, and police have not yet filed any charges in relation to the incident. 

North Carolina has a poor record when it comes to fatal car crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that in 2017, 1,412 people were killed in collisions in the state. The high number of deaths indicates that North Carolina is only behind four other states in terms of fatal accidents. The states with worse records include Texas, Georgia, Florida, and California. About one-third of the collisions in North Carolina involved an alcohol-impaired individual. 

Speeding is also a leading cause of wrecks in the state. About 40 percent of the deadly collisions that occur on North Carolina roads involve a speeding driver. Many people in the state are also failing to use their seatbelts. Statistics indicate that 61 percent of those killed in North Carolina vehicle accidents were not using proper restraints. Distracted driving is also taking a toll on the state.
