Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Pedestrian in Charlotte, North Carolina (NC)

April 30, 2020

CHARLOTTE, NC- Fox46charlotte.com writes that a pedestrian died after being struck by a car this week in Charlotte. The overnight collision occurred on East W.T. Harris Boulevard. Police were called to the scene where they found the victim in the roadway where she was lying unresponsive. Medics declared the woman dead at the scene.*

The driver who struck the woman fled the site of the crash. At the time of the incident, the driver was traveling southeast, and the victim was crossing the street. Debris at the scene was identified as belonging to a silver Honda sedan. Police located the car, which displayed damage on the front driver’s side. The Honda was parked in the driveway of a residential property on Lawyers Road.

Officers contacted the vehicle’s owner and took possession of the car in order to process it for evidence. The owner of the Honda also agreed to be interviewed by the police. Following the interview, police arrested the woman and charged her for fleeing the scene of a deadly crash. It does not appear that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident. Police do not believe that the woman was speeding at the time either.

The victim’s family has been notified of the fatal crash. The driver is now being held in the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. The crash is still under investigation, and police are requesting that anyone with information about the deadly accident contact the police or Crime Stoppers.

Pedestrians and cyclists are the most likely victims of hit-and-run crashes. The AAA states that this is likely because drivers are able to flee because their cars often do not suffer much damage even in severe pedestrian crashes.
