One Killed in Tragic Crash on NC 711 in Lumberton, North Carolina
LUMBERTON, NC- Robesonian.com writes that a collision took place this week in the afternoon that tragically killed one person in Lumberton. The incident occurred when a white GMC Sierra pickup truck was traveling westbound and veered over the center of the roadway and struck an eastbound Jeep Cherokee head-on.*
The wreck killed the driver in the Jeep at the scene. The driver who was in the GMC sustained severe injuries and was transported to a hospital in Myrtle Beach via helicopter. The authorities are not yet releasing the identities of the drivers. No passengers were traveling in either of the involved vehicles.
Newer thinking about traffic safety is acknowledging the fact that drivers are bound to make mistakes. While we know human errors are unavoidable, this does not have to mean that crashes and road fatalities are unavoidable as well. Instead, the responsibility of keeping people safe on the road is being shifted from a system that relies on drivers being responsible for looking to officials to design roads and systems that prevent crashes.
One of the strategies is to plan for land use that will minimize the need for people to travel in private vehicles. The next consideration is engineering, safer roads. One of the main suggestions is adding medians to prevent head-on collisions, and another is to install roundabouts when the intersections are unsafe. Other factors involve making roads safer for pedestrians, promoting mass transit, designing roads that discourage speeding, and enforcing traffic laws. Of course, better and safer cars are also important, so improving crash avoidance systems will prove beneficial. Providing better and more responsive emergency cars would also help save lives.
