Third Student from UMO Killed in Crash in Wayne County, North Carolina
WAYNE COUNTY, NC- Goldsborodailynews.com. writes that a collision took place recently that killed three students from the University of Mount Olive. Reports came out this week, indicating that a third student died as a result of injuries that he sustained in the wreck.*
The third victim was a baseball player at the school and was a business major in his senior year at the University. The school’s president spoke out about the horrible tragedy and offered thoughts and prayers to the victim’s family.The other two victims, which included a freshmen student from New York and a sophomore from New Jersey, both died at the scene of the crash. Another four women are still receiving treatment at the Vidant Greenville medical facility. According to the early reports, most of the victims were members of the women’s lacrosse team.
The crash took place when the victims, who were in a Jeep, were merging onto NC Highway 55 from State Road 1744, also referred to as Indian Springs Road. The Jeep collided with a semi-truck. There were five people in the back of the vehicle, and none of them was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The five unbelted students were ejected from the vehicle. One of the young women who died at the scene was a passenger in the front of the vehicle and had her seatbelt on when the wreck took place.
A University spokesperson stated that the tragedy has been hard for the school’s community. Counselors were on campus at the school to provide support to the students and faculty. The truck driver did not suffer any injuries in the crash. Police are still investigating the incident but stated that the Jeep failed to yield the right-of-way.
