Man Pleads Guilty in Crash That Killed Taxi Driver
WINSTON-SALEM, NC- Wxii12.com writes that a man has pled guilty to numerous charges stemming from a hit-and-run crash that killed a mom who was operating a taxi. The victim, a 35-year-old woman, was driving for Universal Taxi cab at the time. The family says the mother was working to earn enough to cover the celebration of her daughter’s baptism. As the woman exited a shopping center located on New Walkertown Road in the evening, the suspect crashed his 2006 Infiniti into her 1994 Honda Accord.*
The victim, who has two young children, died at the scene of the crash. According to the police, the suspect, a 26-year-old man, was traveling over 75 miles per hour when he collided with the Honda. The suspect has multiple other vehicle violations, and his driver’s license was revoked prior to the time of the incident. The speed limit at the site of the wreck was only 45 miles per hour.
Following the deadly collision, the driver and a passenger exited their car and ran away from the scene on foot. Just ten days after the crash, a police officer saw the suspect at a gas station and immediately knew he was the man wanted in connection to the tragic wreck.
When the officer approached the suspect and attempted to arrest him, the suspect pulled a gun on the policeman. The officer was able to pin the suspect. The man was arrested, and police located drugs on his person.
The suspect, who was also caught on video racing at nearly 140 miles per hour on other occasions, was charged with several offenses, including second-degree murder.
