Family Looking For Answers in Hit-and-Run in Durham, North Carolina

DURHAM, NC- Cbs17.com writes that the community in Durham is trying to understand what happened to their loved one, who was severely injured in a hit-and-run crash last month. The victim, a 72-year-old man, was crossing the University Drive when a car hit him and then left the scene. The victim was on the pavement, unconscious with severe life-threatening injuries when responders arrived.*

The man was transported to the Duke Medical Center for treatment and is now recovering in a rehabilitation center. The victim’s sister spoke to the police and lamented the fact that someone was heartless enough to leave a good person dying on the road. She recalled learning of the horrible crash and that while her brother was still alive, the injuries were severe. 

By the time she drove from her Columbia home to Durham, she had found that the victim was still in intensive care with a traumatic brain injury and multiple bone fractures. For several days the victim’s condition was touch and go, but he eventually stabilized. Despite the fact that the man survived his injuries, the impact will be life-altering. His family says it might not be possible for the retired former IBM employee to ever live on his own because of his injuries. 

The victim can no longer walk, sit, or stand on his own. 

Even now, the police have not identified the driver. Based on the video from the scene, the vehicle appears to have been a white Chevrolet SUV or truck. The family is asking anyone who has information about the crash contact the police. Without finding the responsible person, the family cannot find closure.
