Car Chase in North Carolina Ends in Severe Wreck in Winston-Salem
WINSTON-SALEM, NC- Newspressnow.com writes that a collision occurred in Winston-Salem, injuring four people. The crash took place after a car chase that occurred on Interstate 74 when a BMW was attempting to flee from Forsyth County police officers. The chase began when the officers tried to initiate a traffic stop, and the driver sped away.*
The police followed the driver, who then collided with a Ford SUV. The impact led to the BMW striking a tree before it rolled over and ended up on its roof. The 36-year-old driving the fleeing BMW was transported to the hospital with severe injuries and was also placed under arrest. Officers located a loaded rifle on the ground close to the site of the wreck.
Two passengers in the BMW also suffered injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital. The person in the Ford suffered injuries and was hospitalized following the crash.
The driver who fled from the police is now facing charges for delaying and obstructing an officer and felony fleeing to elude arrest.
Police chases frequently result in serious and sometimes deadly collisions. In many places, officers are under strict guidelines when it comes to whether they are able to pursue a suspect or not. The issue of police chases is controversial because if police are not able to follow a car, many suspects may realize that they can easily escape justice. However, a chase can cause greater risks to innocent bystanders and the public than the suspect poses in many cases. Officers must make a quick judgment call as to how much of a risk the fleeing person presents, versus that of a chase.
