Man Struck by Vehicle in Tragic Pedestrian Crash in Rolesville, North Carolina

March 04, 2020

ROSEVILLE, NC - Cbs17.com writes that a man was struck by a car in Roseville this week in a tragic pedestrian crash. The victim was walking on South Main Street when a southbound 2015 Toyota Camry collided with him.*

The incident occurred in the later evening. Police stated that weather was not a factor in the incident. The victim was identified as a 75-year-old man from Roseville. He was transported to the WakeMed medical facility, where he passed away as a result of his injuries. The driver remained at the scene of the collision and is reportedly cooperating with the investigation. The road was closed for several hours following the fatal accident.

Pedestrian deaths are a major problem across the United States. These deaths continue to increase each year. The number of pedestrian deaths has raised alarms across the nation, and many cities are taking steps to reduce risks to people walking near the road and crossing the street. One of the main obstacles when it comes to preventing pedestrian deaths is that many of them occur at night and outside of crosswalks. Drivers have poor visibility when it is dark out, and headlights are not enough to help prevent pedestrians from being struck by cars.

One possible solution to this issue is better pedestrian detection technology. It is unlikely that streetlights will be available in all places where pedestrians may be walking, and headlights do not illuminate enough to show people to the side of the road. Pedestrian detecting technology is being designed, but it is so far not able to identify people in the dark. Hopefully, when these features improve, they will be capable of preventing many of these fatalities.
