Motorcycle and SUV Crash Kills Paratrooper in Fayetteville

March 07, 2020

FAYETTEVILLE, NC- Abc11.com writes that an SUV and a motorcycle were involved in a crash in Fayetteville this week. Two people were on the motorcycle at the time of the crash, and both died.*

According to the police, the vehicles were driving towards one another prior to the impact. The man operating the motorcycle was a paratrooper originally from Miami. A representative for the 82nd Airborne Division spoke out after the fatal incident and expressed sadness over the tragic incident. The driver operating the SUV also suffered injuries in the collision. Reports did not indicate what caused the horrible crash. Police are asking that any witnesses report to the Fayetteville Department or Crime Stoppers.

Motorcyclists are at a greater risk of being in a fatal accident than vehicle occupants in passenger cars. There are few safety features available for motorcyclists. Unlike cars, these two-wheeled vehicles do not have seat belts or airbags.

In North Carolina, the law states that motorcyclists must wear a helmet. This law applies to anyone riding regardless of their age. The helmets must comply with the standards set by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218. Helmets offer some protection to bikers who are on a vehicle that leaves them extremely vulnerable. Many riders fought the helmet law in the state on the grounds of personal freedom. While most motorcyclists recommend that a rider use a helmet, they say ultimately, this should be a personal decision.

Another main cause of fatal motorcycle crash is alcohol. Research indicates that about one out of four motorcycle crashes involves a rider who is under the influence of alcohol. Inexperienced riders are another risk factor, and many safety advocates recommend that anyone planning to ride should take a course to learn how to do so properly.
