North Carolina Driver Claims His Kia Caught on Fire Without a Crash

CHARLOTTE, NC- Wwaytv3.com writes that a Kia caught on fire without any apparent reason. The owner stated that he purchased the 2015 Kia Optima, and it caught fire an hour later. The man stated that he left the car in his driveway and did not smell or see any signs that something was wrong. Later he received a phone call telling him that the vehicle was engulfed in flames.*

Kia is conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire but has not released the results to that study at this time. 

Car fires account for about one out of five fires in the United States. In some instances, the reason is a flaw in the car’s design. A design flaw often creates a situation where a fire is likely to result, but not where it is inevitable. In these cases, the fire may be caused in a certain type of crash. If a manufacturer learns of a design flaw that creates a risk of a fire, then that manufacturer will often issue a recall to remedy the problem.

Poorly maintained vehicles, or cars that have been repaired incorrectly may also increase the chances of a fire. 

Of course, car crashes are another main cause of fires. While manufacturers try to prevent these fires, when fuel spills and vehicles heat up, the results are often ripe of a spark to lead to a fire. 

When it comes to hybrids and electric cars, the batteries can potentially catch fire. These car batteries can in rare instances cause chain reactions that lead to the cars igniting. 

Catalytic converters have been known to overheat and can sometimes lead to fires. Overworked catalytic converters can overheat, and they are already running at high temperatures. Likewise, engines are capable of overheating and igniting.
