Pedestrian Killed in Rolesville; No Charges Filed Against Motorist

ROLESVILLE, NC- Wral.com writes that a car struck and killed a pedestrian in Rolesville on South Main Street this week. The incident happened in the later evening when the driver was traveling home.*

The pedestrian, a 75-year-old man from Rolesville, was crossing the road when the driver hit him. The motorist did not initially know that he had struck a person and completed a U-turn to check. At that point in time, he saw the victim on the road. The victim was treated at WakeMed but died a short while later from the injuries he sustained in the crash. Officers stated that no charges were filed in relation to the crash and that the driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation.

The majority of pedestrian collisions occur at night. Driver visibility is a major factor in these incidents. In some instances, especially in areas that are heavily trafficked by pedestrians, improvements to streetlights might increase safety for people walking across the road. Headlights do not work well when it comes to showing a pedestrian near the roadway. In many cases, a driver will not be able to see the pedestrian until they are too close to come to a complete stop. 

One other way to reduce the number of pedestrian crashes would be to decrease the speed limit. At lower speeds, drivers will have more time to stop before striking a person, making accidents less likely. Additionally, when drivers are moving at slower rates, the resulting injuries are far less severe. The chances of death rise as the speed of the car increases. Because of this, many safety advocates recommend that speed limits in areas with many pedestrians do not exceed twenty miles per hour.
