Drivers in North Carolina Urged to Stay off Roads Due to Winter Weather
CHARLOTTE, NC- Wcnc.com writes that winter weather is putting motorists at risk on the road in the Carolinas. While the states are working to salt the roadways and make conditions as safe as possible, the weather is presenting drivers with a number of risks.*
With snow anticipated for the region, this week, officials are recommending that drivers stay home or at least off of the roads if at all possible. Snow and sleet can impair driver visibility making it more likely that crashes may occur. As the temperatures drop, there will be a risk of black ice which can cause drivers to slide and lose control on the roadway.
One Charlotte local stated that she is hopeful that drivers in the region will slow down and that there will not be a high number of crashes resulting from the weather conditions. Some complain that drivers travel too fast regardless of rain or snow and make the roads too dangerous.
The AAA states that weather contributes to about 2,000 vehicle crash fatalities each year in the United States. A representative from the Carolina’s branch of the AAA stated its best to stay off the roads. Driving in bad weather means taking an unnecessary risk.
Drivers who do venture out in the snow need to be mindful of their speed. If a driver does find themselves sliding in the snow, it is best to try to avoid braking and turn the steering wheel to the direction the rear is sliding.
Despite the efforts to keep the roads clear, the police are preparing themselves for two or three times as many accident calls.
