Crash Involving Amazon Truck Litters Highway with Packages in North Carolina

February 05, 2020

IREDELL COUNTY, NC - writes that packages spilled across the ground after a truck was involved in a crash on Interstate 77. The incident occurred in the early morning in the northbound lanes. Police shut the roadway down for hours while crews worked to clear the scene. Many of the packages were collected and transferred to another truck. Images show backed up traffic on the road making its way through the one open lane.*

Roadway debris can lead to dangerous results. When debris is left on the road, is causes a number of risks to drivers. The AAA conducted a study on how many crashes are caused by debris in the roadway and found that in a four-year time period, more than 500 people died in these collisions, and 39,000 people suffered injuries in a total of 200,000 crashes.

In some instances, the driver may strike objects causing them to collide with other vehicles. In other instances, a driver may not see an object until they are about to strike it and may instinctually attempt to avoid hitting the object. The effort to swerve may be more dangerous than striking the object, and the driver may lose control of his or her vehicle. One out of every three of the fatal collisions caused by roadway debris was the result of a driver swerving. While some forms of debris are likely to occur, such as pieces of blown tires or tree branches that fall after a storm, other roadway rubbish is the result of people failing to secure cargo on their vehicles properly. Drivers can reduce their risks of being in these types of collisions by giving other vehicles space on the road and remaining alert at the wheel.
