Police Identify Driver of Semi Involved in Tragic Hit-and-Run Crash

BARBERVILLE, FL- News-journal.com writes that police have identified a driver who was involved in a hit-and-run collision that killed a 56-year-old man over the weekend. The semi driver checked into a hospital claiming to have been “disoriented” after the wreck.*

The 30-year-old suspect was operating a 2009 tractor-trailer when he was involved in a head-on collision with a 2018 Ford pickup truck. After the impact, the trucker stated that he veered into the woods. The incident occurred in the late morning, and in the very early morning the next day, the man arrived at the AdventHealth Daytona Beach. The man identified himself as the driver involved in the previous day’s fatal crash. The victim died at the scene, and his 46-year-old wife sustained injuries and was taken to the Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment. 

The police stated that the semi was driving westbound when it entered the Ford’s eastbound lane, colliding with the smaller vehicle. Following the impact, the pickup caught fire, but the female passenger was able to get out of the car. The semi struck some trees on the side of the road, and the driver left on foot. Police are questioning the suspect about how he made his way from the scene of the accident to the hospital in Daytona Beach. The aftermath of the collision is being considered part of the criminal investigation. Police say that charges are pending against the driver. 

Hit-and-run crashes are increasing around the country. Florida ranks number three when it comes to states with the highest number of drivers who flee the scene following deadly car crashes.
