Luggage Cart Driver Dies in Tragic Accident on Tarmac in Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, NC- Dallasnews.com writes that a man died in a tragic accident at the Charlotte International Airport. The victim’s family is now suing American Airlines and pointing to numerous similar fatalities on tarmacs within the last ten years to indicate that this death was part of a dangerous pattern.*
The luggage cart driver was transporting baggage when he attempted to swerve to avoid a bag that was on the tarmac. The victim’s vehicle rolled over, killing the man. The incident is one of fifteen or more fatal work-related accidents that have taken place on tarmacs in the United States within the last ten years. Five of the deaths took place in 2019.
Last week, a congressional aviation committee held a hearing to address the safety of workers in the airline industry. Grounds workers are often subjected to hazardous conditions, including inclement weather, vehicles without seatbelts, and heavy lifting. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has not yet completed its report on the incident and has not yet released information regarding the cause of the fatal crash. The state is also still carrying out its own investigation into the incident. There is some indication that poor lighting was involved, and that the victim could not see the obstruction in the road until it was too late. Reports indicate that the wreck caused the victim to sustain multiple fractures when the vehicle pinned his pelvis, abdomen, and legs. The family’s attorney claims that the airline was aware of the insufficient lighting in the area and that employees were at risk because of the dark conditions in which they were required to work.
