School Bus Involved in Crash in Forsyth County, North Carolina

January 13, 2020

FORSYTH COUNTY, NC- writes that a crash took place early in the morning this week in Forsyth County involving a school bus and a minivan.*

The crash took place at the intersection of Robinhood Road and Lewisville-Vienna Road.

The person operating the minivan sustained injuries in the collision. The disabled bus was towed from the scene, but reports indicate that none of the students or other occupants sustained injuries. Images from the scene show the bus blocking traffic as it is stopped across the middle of the intersection.

School buses are designed to be safer than any other vehicle, and based on statistics; students are far more likely to get to their destination safely when riding one of these buses than if they drive in a car. In collisions between school buses and other vehicles, the people in the other vehicles are at a greater risk of injury in most situations.

Some safety advocates have lobbied for school buses to include seatbelts, but others point out that the design is intended to keep students safe crashes without this feature. The riskiest time for students is not once they are on board, but rather when they are trying to get on or off the bus. The vehicles are equipped with stop sign arms which tell drivers they must stop and wait, but these are not always obeyed by motorists. Other safety features, such as cameras that catch violating drivers, may have a greater impact on improving safety for children who ride school buses than would be installing seatbelts. Still, seatbelt bills keep popping up in states around the nation. Seventeen were presented in 2018, but none were passed.
