School Bus Crash in Guilford County Hospitalizes Three

January 13, 2020

GREENSBORO, NC- Wfmynews2.com writes that a school bus was involved in a crash this week during the early morning on Coltrane Mill Road.*

The bus was carrying students to the Mell-Burton School. Four students were on the bus at the time of the crash along with two adults from the school.Reports indicate that the bus was driving eastbound when a westbound 2007 Ford veered across the centerline. The two vehicles collided, and the bus crashed into a ditch on the side of the road. The Ford remained on the roadway. Responders transported three students to the Moses Cone Hospital, where they were treated for injuries they sustained in the crash.

The woman operating the Ford is now facing charges for her role in the crash, including driving left of center and having an expired tag.

While school bus crashes often get plenty of media attention, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that these vehicles are the safest on the roadway. Even the color of a school bus is meant to attract driver attention and alert other motorists of the bus’s presence. The vehicles have rollover protection and are required to meet safety standards that far surpass those of other passenger buses. Students taking a school bus have a far better chance of getting safely to their destination than those who travel in a passenger vehicle.

Safety risks associated with school buses are largely related to students walking to and from the buses and not incidents that occur while children are on the bus. The buses stop sign arms are intended to prevent pedestrian incidents involving the passengers walking to and from the bus.
