Deadly Logging Truck Crash Reported on I-77 in Iredell County, North Carolina
IREDELL COUNTY, NC. – According to a news article posted online by wcnc.com, a deadly logging truck crash was reported on Interstate 77 in Iredell County, North Carolina. The victim has been identified, but authorities have not released complete information about the circumstances of the accident.*
The accident happened in the morning, near mile marker 52 on the northbound side of I-77. This is close to the Interstate 40 interchange. North Carolina State Highway Patrol and WCNC report that around 8:30 a.m., a 2005 Toyota Scion was headed north on the interstate in the left lane. The driver of the Toyota somehow lost control of the vehicle and ended up crashing into the guardrail that was separating the two sides of the interstate.
Following the impact, the Toyota veered back onto the interstate and entered the right lane, where it crossed into the path of a 1997 International logging truck. The two vehicles then collided, after which they both ran off the road on the right side. The logging truck subsequently turned onto its side, and logs fell from the back trailer.
WCNC reports that the driver of the Toyota was tragically killed in the crash. The report identified him as a 27-year-old man from Wilkesboro, North Carolina. The driver of the logging truck was identified as a 62-year-old man from Mocksville, North Carolina. WCNC says he was not injured. The logging truck reportedly belonged to Shaver Wood Products out of Cleveland, North Carolina.
It is not yet clear what caused the accident. WCNC reports that witnesses said the driver of the Toyota was driving erratically before crashing into the guardrail, but this information was not confirmed by authorities.
