School Bus Involved in Crash in North Charlotte

November 05, 2019

CHARLOTTE, NC- Fox46charlotte.com writes that emergency crews were called to the scene of an accident in Charlotte late last week during the early morning hours. The collision occurred at Statesville and Atando Avenue.*

Wbtv.com writes that a second collision involving a school bus was reported in south Charlotte the same day, during the afternoon hours. Reports indicate that the bus was traveling from Marie G. Davis Middle School when it was involved in a crash on Griffith Street. One of the students on the bus suffered injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

The Mecklenburg EMS stated that the initial reports involved three possible injuries. School buses are not often involved in severe accidents, but  when these accidents do occur, they get plenty of attention.  The vehicles that transport our children to school are designed to be as safe as possible. Parents are putting their trust in these vehicles to get their children to school safely. The iconic school bus yellow was selected as the color for these buses as it is highly visible making it more likely that other drivers will take notice of the bus. The interior is designed to protect students in an impact.

In many places, school buses do not have seatbelts. Many experts believe that the design of school buses makes seatbelts unnecessary and that there are other ways to make children safer during their commutes. Many argue that resources that could be spent on seatbelts would be better spent on other safety measures. Currently, students who ride the bus have a far greater chance of making it to school safely than students who get to and from school by other means.
