Crash Closes Down Interstate 485 in Charlotte, North Carolina

CHARLOTTE, NC- Wcnc.com writes that a collision led to the closure of the inner loop of Interstate 485 late last week. The crash occurred in the evening and led to three people being hospitalized.*

The reports from Charlotte Fire indicate that one vehicle involved rolled over in the crash leading to the occupant becoming pinned inside the car. The reports did not include information regarding the cause of the crash. 

Driving at night presents certain risks. Experts estimate that about 90 percent of the decisions a driver makes are based on what they can see. At night, the range of vision for drivers is limited, making their ability to make good driving decisions a challenge. There are about 60 percent fewer vehicles on the roadway at night, and yet about 40 percent of deadly car accidents take place after dark. Headlights only illuminate a small portion of the roadway and leave drivers unable to see things that are outside of the lit area. This is a problem for car accidents and for pedestrian accidents as well. 

Additionally, night driving increases the chances of there being a drunk or drowsy driver on the road. Drunk drivers are far more prevalent at night than during the day. While drunk driving has become much less common in the last few decades, alcohol is still a factor in a large percentage of fatal car crashes. 

When driving at night, it is important to give other drivers plenty of space. If a driver is swerving or driving erratically, staying as far away as possible is even more important.  Of course, be sure your headlights function properly, your windshield is clean and that you stay sober and focused on the road ahead.
