North Carolina Safety Resources
Watchformenc.org reports to parents, teachers, and school transportation faculty regarding the safety information for students going to public schools and using school transportation, such as school buses. The schools are required by law to provide training to students during the first days of school and at least one time each semester.*
The state provides resources through Active Routes to School, a project that involves setting up safe ways for elementary and middle school students to walk or ride bikes to school. The project includes ten coordinators who work with the communities to develop local strategies. The N.C. Department of Transportation and the N.C. Division of Public Health both provide support to this program.
The BuckleUpNC website also provides information regarding vehicle safety for families. The site gives parents information about seatbelts, airbag safety, and child restraint systems. Families can also learn about the state's laws for drivers and vehicle occupants.
SafeKids North Carolina is another organization dedicated to increasing child safety and lowering the number of accidental childhood injuries, which cause more deaths in individuals nineteen and under than any other cause or condition. This program is one out of hundreds of Safe Kids Worldwide coalitions.
The North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program works to create safer roads in the state. The website provides information about highway safety, bike and pedestrian safety, school bus safety, and about properly restraining vehicle occupants.
Let's Go, NC! is a pedestrian and cyclist safety program that focuses on teaching the essential road safety skills that children need to be able to walk and bike safety. The site includes materials, lesson plans, videos, and activities that are designed to teach children safe habits when they are around roadways and traffic.
