Vehicles Continue to Fail to Stop for School Buses in Union County, North Carolina

WAXHAW, NC – According to an online news report at fox46charlotte.com, automobiles continue to fail to stop for school buses when their stop arm is extended.  This remains a significant problem in Union County, North Carolina.

In Waxhaw, North Carolina, there is a significant amount of traffic that occurs around Cutherbertson and New Town roads.  One local resident said that the growing traffic problem is typical in the area, and with this, there is a growing trend of one type of traffic issue that he does not like. 

"I'm exhausted, I'm tired, I want this to stop," the local resident told reporters.  What he is referring to are drivers who fail to stop for school buses with their stop arms extended.  The man, who is the father of a young son, caught on video a car that ran a bus stop sign. He notes that this is a growing problem in the area that continues to happen. 

Under North Carolina law, drivers are required to stop for stopped school buses with their stop arm extended or flashing red lights, which means they are either dropping off or picking up passengers.  Under North Carolina General Statute § 20-217, “[w]hen a school bus is displaying its mechanical stop signal or flashing red lights and the bus is stopped for the purpose of receiving or discharging passengers, the driver of any other vehicle that approaches the school bus from any direction on the same street, highway, or public vehicular area shall bring that other vehicle to a full stop and shall remain stopped. The driver of the other vehicle shall not proceed to move, pass, or attempt to pass the school bus until after the mechanical stop signal has been withdrawn, the flashing red stoplights have been turned off, and the bus has started to move.”

Moreover, the law provides that drivers are only permitted to pass a school bus that is displaying its stop arm or flashing red lights on a four-lane road with a center turning lane.  In this instance, drivers who are going in the opposite direction do not have to stop for the school bus.
