As Speed Limits Go Up, So do the Number of Speed-Related Deaths

Chapel Hill, NC – According to an online report at chathamjournal.com, higher speed limits often mean an increase in the amount of speed-related deaths.

A 2019 study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety demonstrates that a five-mile per hour increase in the speed limit could mean the difference between life and death.  The study evaluated the effects of increased speed limits since 1993 and found that a five-mile per hour increase in the maximum speed limit results in an 8.5% increase in death rates on interstates and a 2.8% increase on other roadways.

In 2016 in North Carolina, there were 369 speed-related fatalities and nearly 19,000 speed-related accidents.  In 24% of all of the deadly accidents for that year, speeding was a major factor.  Back in 2018, troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol issued 346,000 speeding tickets.  

A former trooper notes that he would issue speeding citations every day. He states that “[s]peeding is one of our major contributing factors to collisions.  It’s one of the things we take very seriously, and it’s one of the major offenses that we monitor on the roadway.”

Back in 1993, most states in the U.S. had a maximum speed limit of 65 miles per hour with some that were lower at 55 miles per hour.  Now, 41 states across the county have speed limits of 70 miles per hour or higher.  Six states have a maximum speed limit of 80 miles per hour, and drivers in the state of Texas can drive up to 85 miles per hour on designated roadways.
