Man Tragically Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle on a Charlotte Highway, North Carolina

October 31, 2019

CHARLOTTE, NC -  According to an online news report at wbtv.com, a man was tragically killed after being struck by a vehicle on a highway in Charlotte earlier this week.  The accident led to the road being shut down for a certain period of time.*

Per the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the accident occurred on Brookshire Boulevard between Interstate 77 and Graham Street.  Police note that after the man was hit, he was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.  The outer loop of Brookshire Boulevard between Interstate 77 and Tryon Street was temporarily closed due to the incident.  The roadway was once again opened to traffic after a few hours following the crash.

According to police, a 2017 Kia Sorento with damage to its rear-end and a 2012 Nissan Maxima stayed at the scene of the accident.  The Nissan and Kia were traveling in a 50-mph zone when the man was walking on the freeway that lacked adequate lighting so that he could be visible to drivers.  The pedestrian’s back was facing oncoming traffic.

The driver of the Kia was not able to avoid hitting the pedestrian.  As a result, the Kia was then struck by the Nissan from behind due to having stopped short.  The pedestrian has not yet been identified.  It is not clear from the report as to how the accident specifically occurred and who is at fault for the crash.

Police have indicated that speeding and alcohol/drug impairment do not appear to be factors in the crash.  The section of Brookshire Freeway where the man was walking does not have a marked pedestrian crossing.

There are no further details on the accident at this time. The crash remains under investigation by the local police.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
