Police Report Motorcycle Crash by Wiley Middle School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina

October 21, 2019

WINSTON-SALEM, NC- writes that an early-morning crash involving a motorcyclist occurred close to Wiley Middle School. The collision happened at the intersection of Northwest Boulevard and North Hawthorne Road and led to part of the roadway being blocked. The incident slowed down school bus traffic in the area causing delays in students’ arrival times.*

More than 50 percent of motorcycle crashes take place at intersections and involve a passenger vehicle. One of the most significant risks to motorcyclists is a vehicle that is making a left turn. The most common scenario consists of the driver of a four-wheel vehicle making a turn without seeing a motorcycle that is approaching and indenting to drive through the intersection. The motorcycle has the right of way in these scenarios, but the driver fails to see them because he or she might be looking out for larger vehicles and simply fails to notice the oncoming motorcycle.

These accidents often do nothing more than property damage to the larger vehicle, but they can be deadly for the motorcyclist.

Another issue surrounding intersections is that they tend to be quite heavily traveled parts of the road. There might be more potholes or other rough spots in the pavement. For a car, a pothole might be an inconvenience and rough on the tires, but for a motorcycle, these parts of the road can cause severe crashes. Motorcycles are harder to balance and require skill to operate. A flawed roadway can mean grave dangers for a motorcyclist.

It is vital that bikers attempt to make themselves as visible as possible to others on the road. Reflective clothing is one way to accomplish this, and after dark, it is essential to always have a headlight on. Of course, motorcyclists should always wear a helmet.
