Crash Leaves Motorcyclist with Critical Injuries in Winston-Salem, North Carolina

WINSTON-SALEM, NC- Myfox8.com writes that a motorcycle was involved in a collision with an SUV in Winston-Salem. The motorcyclist sustained severe injuries in the wreck and was taken to a nearby hospital. Reports indicate that the victim is in critical condition.*

The incident took place at Northwest Boulevard and North Hawthorne Road earlier this morning. The roadway was shut down while the scene was investigated and cleared. Police have not released information regarding the identities of those involved or the cause of the crash. 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that motorcycle fatalities dropped by about three percent in 2017, with a reported 5,172 bikers killed throughout the United States. Despite the decrease, motorcyclists are still overrepresented in vehicle-related deaths. The NHTSA is urging motorcyclists to be vigilant about their own safety by making themselves visible, using helmets approved by the DOT, and by never riding under the influence. 

Statistics indicate that more than one-quarter of motorcyclists killed in crashes in 2017 were drunk at the time of the accident.

Bikers know that riding a motorcycle requires more skill, coordination, and balance than driving a four-wheeled vehicle. The challenge of riding a motorcycle is just one of the many factors that put these individuals at risk. Motorcyclists are around 28 times more likely to die in a wreck as individuals traveling in passenger automobiles.
