North Carolina Officer Prepare for One of Deadliest Weekends for Road Travel

GREENVILLE, NC- Wcti12.com writes that according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Columbus Day is second to only the Fourth of July when it comes to dangers of road travel in the state.*

The state issued urgent warnings to residents to buckle up and stay safe on the road, and police departments across the state are taking part in the “Operation Crash Reduction” program in an attempt to lower the number of crash-related fatalities.*

North Carolina tends to see high numbers of deaths in October as people attend football games, festivals, and other activities. In the past five years, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that there was an average of one hundred 35 deaths in the state in the month of October.

The authorities are reminding motorists that in order to stay safe, they should wear their seatbelts and adhere to the speed limit. Other advice includes refraining from using a cellphone while driving, and having a designated driver if the outing will include alcohol consumption. 

Statistically, there are certain times of the year when car crashes are more likely. Of course, when more vehicles are on the road, there is a higher chance of accidents taking place just because of the denser traffic. However, holidays present additional risks because people are often drinking and not everyone exercising sound judgment when it comes to getting behind the wheel after a few drinks.

In addition to Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other holidays tend to see an uptick in tragic car crashes. Of course, there are more officers on the road during these times to catch dangerous driving behavior, making the risk of getting caught higher too.
