Pedestrian Struck and Tragically Killed on Interstate 85 in Charlotte, North Carolina
CHARLOTTE, NC – According to an online news report at wcnc.com, all of the lanes of Interstate 85 were closed due to a deadly pedestrian accident that occurred in northern Charlotte, North Carolina late last week, per the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police (CMPD).*
The CMPD reports that it was dispatched to the scene of an accident on Sugar Creek Road on Interstate 85 in the early morning hours. The victim, a male, aged 48, died at the scene of the accident.
A 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis was located in an embankment along the roadway between the Interstate 85 connector and Reagan Drive. It appears that there were no occupants in the vehicle at the time of the crash. A CMPD K-9 unit was dispatched to the scene to try and locate the driver and any occupants, however, no one was found.
An eyewitness of the crash led officers to a 7-11 convenience store located at 1120 West Sugar Creek Road. It appears that the suspect vehicle was at this store before the crash occurred. It appears that when the victim entered the 7-11, the suspect vehicle started to back out of a parking space at the store. Soon thereafter, the victim exited the store and held onto the front passenger side of the vehicle. The CMPD indicate that the vehicle left the store with the victim still holding on. Ultimately, the victim fell off of the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries.
There are multiple agencies that are conducting an investigation of the accident, including the CMPD Major Crash Investigations Unit, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the Crime Scene Search, and the DWI Task Force.
The identities of the driver and the victim have not been released to the public. What caused the man to latch onto the car as it drove way is unknown. It is also not clear whether the driver was impaired due to alcohol or drugs. There are no further details on the accident at this time. The crash remains under investigation.
