Union County, N.C.- Wsoctv.com writes that four teenage girls sustained injuries in a collision in Union County during the afternoon hours. Images taken by a helicopter show the vehicle, an SUV, lying on its side next to a utility pole. The vehicle appears to be severely damaged.*
Reports from officials indicate that the SUV left the roadway, and the driver attempted to pull back onto the road but overcorrected, leading to the vehicle flipping over. The four victims were female students at Parkwood High School.
All of the occupants were transported to local hospitals; two were transported by a medical helicopter. A witness to the crash stated that all of the girls were alert, but two had clearly sustained severe injuries. Two of the girls had been ejected from the SUV, but apparently were able to walk away from the wreck and respond.
A woman who lives by the crash site is a nurse. She went to aid the girls, some of whom were bleeding. The witness said she felt that the victims had some bones.
One of the victim’s mothers said the crash was difficult for her emotionally and that the community had come together to support the girls’ families, She said all of the girls were in the 11thgrade and that they were on their way home at the time of the accident.
One of the teens is reported has having to undergo surgery for an injury to her leg, and one of the other victims sustained head injuries. Two of the teens were released from the hospital.
SUVs are more likely to overturn in a crash because they are top-heavy. Rollover accidents can cause vehicle ejections. It is important to use a seatbelt to avoid being thrown from a vehicle in a rollover crash.
