Fatal Crash Reported Close to Near West Sugar Creek, North Carolina

October 09, 2019

CHARLOTTE, NC- Newsmaven.io writes that a fatal pedestrian accident took place in Charlotte. The crash occurred in the early morning on Northbound I-85 at Sugar Creek. The roadway was closed following the incident.*

Fatal pedestrian crashes are becoming increasingly common across the country. North Carolina is one of the most dangerous states for pedestrians and cyclists, with about 3,000 pedestrian accidents, and 850 bicycle crashes each year within the state.  While vehicles are safer than ever, and cities and states seem to be taking road safety more seriously than in the past, the number of people killed while walking on the roadway is rising. While part of the issue can be explained by simple increases in population size, there are likely numerous issues at play.

Many experts believe that part of the problem stems from America’s love of big cars. SUVs are outpacing sedans as the most popular type of vehicles in the country. While bigger cars may offer better protection for occupants, they present risks to vulnerable pedestrians and cyclists. An individual struck by an SUV is more likely to suffer injuries higher up on their body leading to more serious harm.
