Georgia Workers Injured on the Job Have Trouble Receiving Health Care

January 26, 2019

ATLANTA, GA. – According to an online news story reported at wsbtv.com, workers in Georgia who have been injured on the job have a lot of trouble receiving the health care they need. They are usually able to receive approval for their initial emergency treatment but hit countless obstacles in receiving necessary follow-up care.*

The Workers Compensation Research Institute performed a recent study that found 18 percent of Georgia’s injured workers have experienced “big problems” obtaining health care treatments that their primary physicians wanted them to receive. This works out to one in every five injured workers in the state. More than half of those workers said their claims were denied because the “employer or insurer did not want the care provided.”

Georgia has one of the lowest rates of injured persons returning to work, which might be due to the difficulties they are experiencing in obtaining approval for the care they need to heal. The Georgia State Workers’ Compensation Board has identified delayed or foregone treatment as a problem.

“We see delays in getting authorization, where there is not an articulated reason for that delay,” said Board Chairman Judge Frank McKay. “And that’s the problem, and I have recognized that, and we are targeting that.”

The Board has recently changed its rules to require sooner intervention by judges on workers’ compensation cases. The new rules also prohibit employers and insurance carriers from delaying treatment or denying treatment to injured workers without a justifiable reason.

“The payer proceeds at their peril in issuing delay after delay in a situation like that,” McKay said.
