Uber Launches Insurance Program for Drivers, Says It’s Not Workers’ Comp.

August 09, 2018

BOSTON, MA. – August 6, 2018 (businessinsurance.com) At a recent meeting in Boston, ride-sharing company Uber explained its new insurance program for drivers while affirming that it is not offering a workers’ compensation program.*

Uber drivers now have the opportunity to opt into the insurance program, which will cover them while they are using the Uber app, driving to pick up passengers and transporting passengers. The program, offered through Aon P.L.C. and OneBeacon Insurance Group, provides coverage similar to workers’ compensation benefits. But Uber has long insisted its drivers are independent contractors, not employees, and thus not entitled to workers’ compensation.

If injured while using the app, an Uber driver covered by the insurance program could receive up to $1 million for medical bills and up to $500 per week in accidental disability benefits. Family members could also receive up to $50,000 in death benefits and $150,000 in survivor benefits if they lose loved ones who were involved in accidents while driving for Uber.

The insurance coverage costs drivers 3.5 cents per mile, but can be cost neutral for drivers because of recent rate increases implemented by Uber. The company recently raised its rates by 5 cents per mile, 75 percent of which drivers keep. With drivers now receiving an extra 3.75 cents per mile, they can use the additional income to pay for the coverage. Uber is hoping most of its drivers choose to take advantage of the opportunity.

“The cost does not have to be a factor in the driver’s decision to opt in for the program,” said Brad Nail, senior risk and public policy manager for Uber. “We don’t make any money off of this transaction. It’s between the insurer and the insured. We merely pass through the premium from the insured to the insurer without retaining any of that premium for ourselves.”
