June 15, 2018

What is workers’ compensation?

According to the Georgia State Board of Workers Compensation, “workers’ compensation is an accident insurance program paid by your employer which may provide you with medical, rehabilitation and income benefits if you are injured on the job. These benefits are provided to help you return to work. It also provides benefits to your dependents if you die as a result of a job related injury.”

Do I have to be on the job for a certain period of time before I am eligible to receive workers’ compensation benefits?

No, you are eligible for coverage on the first day of employment.

What type of employer is required to have workers compensation insurance?

Any company that has three or more employees, whether full time or part time, must have workers compensation insurance. You can verify coverage by visiting www.sbwc.georgia.gov and clicking on “Verify workers’ compensation coverage.”

How much time do I have to report an injury?

If you have been injured on the job, you must report the injury to your supervisor (or boss, foreman, etc.).  If you wait longer than thirty days, you could lose your ability to obtain workers’ compensation benefits.

What type of medical treatment will be covered under workers’ compensation insurance?

All authorized medical professional bills, hospital bills, prescription medications, physical therapy and associated travel expenses are covered if the injury was caused by an on the job accident.  If you sustained a catastrophic injury, you could be entitled to receive lifetime workers’ compensation benefits.
