Panel Shares Strategies for Workplace Safety in San Antonio, Texas

June 11, 2018

SAN ANTONIO, TX – June 6, 2018 ( A panel of five safety experts shared views and strategies for maintaining worker safety June 5 in San Antonio, Texas. The panel discussion is covered by

At the American Society of Safety Professionals’ #Safety2018 conference and expo, five safety experts debated the best ways to prevent serious and fatal injuries in the workplace. The panel included Dr. E. Scott Geller; Dr. Todd Conklin, of the Los Alamos National Laboratory; Laurie Shelby, vice president of Environmental Health and Safety for Tesla Motors; Al Johnson, vice president of EH&S for Cargill; Ellis Jones, senior director of EH&S at Goodyear; and moderator Dr. Tom Krause.

Conklin said senior leaders in the workplace should be focusing on preventing catastrophic failures looking at both expensive and inexpensive controls. Sometimes the most expensive controls are not the most effective, he said. Shelby said senior leaders needed to spend time on the floor with workers to become plugged into their concerns and potential safety issues. Jones said that senior leaders and safety leaders needed to work together like business partners, and Conklin added that both needed to develop resilient systems for their workers.

Panelists also emphasized the importance of talking with workers to identify needed controls and provide workers with a perception of choice and community. The best safety programs are ones in which people go beyond the controls and beyond the call of duty, Geller said. Shelby said the industry also needed to examine how EH&S professionals were trained. The systems that used to work before might not be effective today, she said.
