Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a disorder affecting the wrist. This disorder will commonly develop in office workers or other employees who perform repetitive hand motions. The carpal tunnel is actually a part of the wrist, consisting of a narrow passageway within the wrist that is lined by several small bones. Within the carpal tunnel area runs a ligament that protects the median nerve, which extends down the thumb to the index, middle fingers and half of the ring finger.

Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

If you constantly use your hands, wrist and fingers for repetitive motions, such as striking, bending, or twisting, the ligament can be strained and press into the median nerve. Compression of this large nerve will cause pain and discomfort in the hands, wrist and fingers.

The most common symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may include pain that can be acute or chronic along with burning, prickling or tingling sensations. Workers who suffer from this condition could have trouble holding tools, typing, using a computer mouse, gripping and performing similar tasks.

Occupations that commonly cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome include, but are not limited to:

  • Factory assembly line workers
  • Data entry or other computer related professions
  • Musicians
  • Professional drivers, such as truck drivers
  • Chefs
  • Craftsmen
