Unsafe, Leaning Crane in Midtown Atlanta is in Danger of Falling outside
ATLANTA, GA - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that a construction crane is dangling off of a 31-story office tower in Midtown Atlanta, and fire officials say the crane is in danger of falling.* The fire officials also reported that it might take two or more days to secure the crane.
The risk of a collapse is significant, and fire officials began evacuating local businesses, residences, and apartment buildings Friday morning, while Atlanta fire crews began working to stabilize the damaged crane outside the high-rise building.
According to the news report, the construction accident did not cause any injuries or deaths. Atlanta fire spokesman, Sargeant Cortez Stafford stated that the construction accident happened just after 9 am on Friday at West Peachtree and 13th street. Fire officials also closed down several surrounding streets in the area, but additional roads would likely be closed should fire and law enforcement authorities determine to expand the evacuation zone encircling the crane.
The current "long duration" road closures are:
- W. Peachtree St NW between 11th and 14th St.
- Spring St NW south of 14th St.
- 13th and 12th Streets are closed between Spring St and Peachtree Walk NE
Sargeant Stafford also stated that he spoke with the construction workers and construction managers about the incident. He was advised that a hydraulic cylinder sustained a mechanical failure during the removal of the tower crane, which caused the top of the crane to lean over. Fortunately, the construction crane operator was able to jump out of the crane and was unharmed. Sargeant Stafford repeated that the crane is still in danger of falling and could cause injuries, deaths, and property damage. He also stated that all the precautions are being taken, including the evacuation of several surrounding buildings.
According to an update, a crane engineer is en route to the crane accident area to fully access and advise on the dangerous situation. An additional two mobile cranes are also on the way to help take down the crane. West Peachtree Street along 10th Street and 14th Street will be shut down for the next 24-48 hours.
