Florida Ranks Number Five in COVID-19 Related Workers' Compensation Claims
According to an online news report provided by several news sources, including miami.cbslocal.com, Florida ranks in the top five nationally for the rate of COVID-19-related workers' compensation claims filed in the first half of 2020.*
The National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) reports Florida, New Jersey, Colorado, Alaska, Connecticut all had over 300 COVID-19-related workers' compensation medical insurance claims for every 100,000 active workers' comp claims.
The national average is approximately 200 COVID-19-related claims for every 100,000 active workers' compensation claims.
Florida had about 1,200 COVID-19 workers' compensation medical claims filed in the first six months of 2020. About seventy percent of the claimants were women. NCCI representatives state that women represent "a larger share of the COVID-19 medical claims than in the general (workers' compensation) population." Authors for the NCCI report hypothesized that the majority of COVID-19 medical claims were female because women make up about 85% of the nation's nursing, nursing aide, and home health care workforces.
The NCCI report recorded that most of the people filing COVID-19-related workers' compensation claims were not hospitalized. Only 20% of medical claims involved inpatient stays, and of those who were hospitalized, only 19% required admission to an intensive care unit for a part of their hospital stay.
The NCCI report discovered that the average age of workers who filed COVID-19 medical claims average was 46, which is five years older than the average age of the claimants filing general workers' compensation claims.
