Leading Causes of Large Truck Accidents in Georgia

June 20, 2019

Large truck accidents are not uncommon in the state of Georgia, and these accidents can have devastating effects on the people involved. Although most tractor-trailer drivers are safe and law-abiding, many large truck accidents are caused by negligence on the part of drivers and trucking companies.

In 2015, more than 430,000 accidents involving large trucks occurred in the United States. More than 115,000 people were injured in those accidents, and 4,067 people were killed. The number of fatalities from large truck crashes that year represented a 4 percent increase from the prior year. Most of the people killed in the 2015 accidents were occupants of vehicles other than the trucks.

In pursuing a claim related to a large truck accident in Georgia, a plaintiff would allege that the truck driver, the trucking company, or both were negligent in some way and that negligence led to the accident and resulting injuries. Some of the ways in which trucking accidents commonly occur in Georgia include:

  • Driver distraction
  • Driver fatigue
  • Drug and/or alcohol use
  • Maintenance failures
  • Improper loading
  • Reckless driving
  • Speeding

Many large truck accidents are due to negligent acts on the part of drivers, like distracted driving, speeding, or falling asleep at the wheel. A significant share of these accidents are also caused by mechanical failures that are either due to improper maintenance or improper operation of the rig.

Regulations are in place to prevent truck drivers from driving for too many hours at a time and from performing other safety violations that place motorists in danger. Unfortunately, not all truckers and trucking carriers follow the rules.
