The Corridor of Interstate 285, Interstate 75 and Interstate 85 a Serious Accident Risk
In Georgia, the corridor of Interstate 285 between Interstate 75 and Interstate 85 is the site of frequent accidents involving large trucks and buses, according to local reports. When these accidents occur, due to their scale, several lanes of the interstate have to be shut down, and gridlock ensues throughout the area. Aside from the traffic backups, these accidents are known for causing serious injuries and fatalities. In 2016, 179 people died on Georgia roads in accidents that involved a bus or a large truck.
As part of a Large Truck and Bus Enforcement and Educational Initiative, law enforcement officers in Cobb County targeted dangerous drivers in the corridor. In total, the officers issued 932 citations. Almost 600 of these citations were for left lane violations. In Georgia, it is illegal for large trucks and buses to drive in the left lane. In addition to lane violations, 12 of the citations were for violations of the Georgia Hands-Free Law, and nine were for speeding.
