Georgia Law Requires Seatbelt Use in Pickups

May 24, 2018

The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has posted information about Georgia’s seatbelt laws, which underwent a change in the recent past, when they were expanded to include pickup trucks.

Up until 2010, Georgia law did not require occupants of pickup trucks to wear seatbelts. That year, the state legislature passed and the governor signed into law a requirement that pickup occupants wear seatbelts. The law was prompted by data indicating that nearly half of the vehicle crashes in the state’s rural areas involved pickup trucks, and 75 percent of the deaths in those accidents were of unrestrained drivers and passengers.

Every year in the state of Georgia, 1,500 deaths occur because of vehicle accidents. Research indicated that 100 lives could be saved every year by implementing a seatbelt law for pickups. The law was opposed by people in rural areas for some time, as it was seen as a battle between rural and urban portions of the state. However, the law did leave exemptions for agricultural purposes, thereby alleviating come concerns for farmers in the state. Seatbelts are proven to reduce the risk of fatality in accidents with pickup trucks. The risk can be reduced by as much as 60 percent in pickup crashes and as much as 80 percent in rollover crashes. Not only do seatbelts save lives, they save medical costs and lost wages, as well as costs of rising auto insurance premiums. If anyone is caught driving or riding in a pickup these days without a seatbelt, Georgia authorities will issue that person a citation.
