Fatal Jefferson County Tractor-Trailer Accident

November 22, 2016

Jefferson County Tractor-Trailer Accident Results in Four Fatalities – Is a Dangerous Intersection to Blame?

A collision between a passenger vehicle and a large tractor-trailer tragically killed four family members. This recent accident occurred in Jefferson County at the intersection of Highway 88 and Highway 296, where a tractor-trailer was unable to avoid striking an oncoming passenger car. The tractor-trailer driver stated that the car drove directly into the truck's path. It struck the car and flipped over, resulting in the deaths of four family members sitting in the backseat of the car. Both the driver and front passenger of the car survived as well as the driver of the tractor-trailer.

Coroner Believes The Intersection of Highways 88 and 296 is Dangerous, and Safety Measures are Necessary

The Jefferson County coroner stated that this accident is the third accident to occur at the intersection of Highways 88 and 296 this year, but that this fatal accident was certainly the worst he had seen. He stated that he had discussed the dangerous nature of this intersection with members of the Georgia Department of Transportation for years. He also believes that safety measures such as flashing lights will make clear to drivers that they must stop and ensure the path is clear before attempting to turn onto one of the highways. The coroner hopes that this accident will finally lead to the implementation of safety measures at the intersection.

Dangerous intersections have been linked to thousands of accidents across the country, and often it takes a significant number of accidents and injuries before something is done to make an intersection safer. It is unfortunate that individuals have lost their lives as a result of accidents that may have been prevented had there been a flashing road sign, stop sign, or stop light, among other safety signals to notify drivers.

Other Potential Causes of This Deadly Tractor-Trailer Accident

While the dangerous nature of the intersection of Highways 88 and 296 may have contributed to the cause of this accident, it is also possible that other factors played a role. Such factors include, but are not limited to, distracted driving, failing to look both ways before crossing an intersection, failure to see an oncoming vehicle due to low visibility, and drowsy driving, among others. At this time, the driver of the tractor-trailer has not been blamed for the accident. It is also unclear whether or not the driver of the passenger vehicle is to blame for the accident, and there will be no answers to these questions until an investigation has been completed.
