Georgia Trucking and Car Accident Attorney Discusses the Rise in Traffic Fatalities in Early 2016

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently released alarming information that all drivers and passengers should be aware of. While traffic accidents are a daily occurrence across the United States, many of us still feel pretty safe when traveling this country's roadways. However, according to the NHTSA, the number of traffic fatalities increased significantly from January to June of this year as compared to the first six months of 2015. Additionally, 2015 recorded the largest increase in traffic fatalities in 50 years, demonstrating that traffic fatalities are on the rise when they should be on the decline.

Additional Information Released by the NHTSA

The NHTSA utilized the following information, among others, to determine that traffic fatalities were more prevalent in the first half of this year as compared to the first half of last year:

• Approximately 16,000 people lost their lives as a result of traffic accidents on United States roadways between January and June of 2015;
• 17,775 people lost their lives as a result of traffic accidents on United States roadways between January and June of 2016, which was a 10.4 percent increase from 2015; and
• There are more drivers on the roadways this year when compared to last year, with a 3.3 percent increase in the number of miles driven, which equals a total of 50 billion additional miles in the first six months of this year.

These statistics establish that the roadways may be getting more dangerous, especially if traffic fatalities continue to increase up as 2016 comes to a close.

Why Are Traffic Fatalities on the Rise?

There are many reasons why there has been an increase in traffic fatalities this year. First, as noted above, the number of miles driven in the first half of 2016 was approximately 50 billion more miles than the first six months of 2015. As such, there are clearly more drivers on the roadways. In addition to having an increased number of miles driven, factors such as distracted driving, drowsy driving, and driving under the influence, among others, all can play a role in the cause of a fatal traffic accident.

For example, most of us have seen the rise in traffic accidents related to the use of phones while driving, whether that be simply talking on the phone, texting, or using a social media application. Many of the recent distracted driving accidents have involved fatal injuries. Something certainly needs to be done to help minimize the risk and occurrence of fatal traffic accidents on United States roadways, and reducing distracted driving will likely help to eliminate some of these tragic accidents.
