FMCSA Proposes Examination of Rear Impact Guards During a Commercial Vehicle's Annual Inspection
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) proposed examining the commercial truck's rear impact guard during a commercial vehicle's annual inspection. Although rear impact guards have been required on most commercial vehicles for about 70 years, rear impact guards are not required to be inspected during an annual vehicle inspection. This means a missing or damaged rear impact guard would not prevent the commercial truck from passing its annual safety inspection.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's recommendation would add rear impact guards to Appendix G of Subchapter B of Chapter III of title 49, Code of Federal Regulations, "Minimum Periodic Inspection Standards."
Great Dane's Director of Product Safety and Compliance, Dan Carter, stated that Great Dane supports the idea of adding the rear impact guard inspection as an item to be reviewed in an FMCSA Part 396 Annual Inspection. Mr. Carter said that rear impact guards are an important part of a highway trailer and should be part of an operator's ongoing maintenance routine.
