Public Welcomed to Learn About Automated Vehicle Testing Progress Using New Online Tool

USA- Ttnews.com writes that Americans can now check out the progress of automated car testing using an online tool. The United States Department of Transportation launched the tool this week, which is part of the Automated Vehicle Transparency and Engagement for Safe Testing (AV-TEST) Initiative.

Those who go to the site will see data collected from on the road tests around the nation. Test locations will be posted on an interactive map that will detail the companies involved at various sites and the vehicles used for the testing. 

Policies and laws related to the development of driverless cars will also be available online. The goal of the site is to foster communication and openness about the new technology. 

According to a representative from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), automated driving systems cannot become a part of our national transportation system until the public trusts such advances in technology. So far, there are nine companies taking part in the program, including Uber, Toyota, Waymo, Fiat Chrysler, Jeep, Local Motors, Cruise, and Nuro. Currently, Arizona, Florida, Texas, Utah, Michigan, Maryland, California, Ohio, and Pennsylvania have test sites. 

Those who support the automated technology point out that the systems have the potential to make the roads far safer for everyone. In addition to cutting down on crashes, the tech will likely help to improve transportation options for elderly and disabled individuals. 

While many people remain skeptical when it comes to driverless cars, the truth is that 94 percent of collisions are caused by human mistakes. Although autonomous vehicles are still working in progress, comparing the safety of such vehicles to that of vehicles with human drivers could highlight the fact that driverless cars will take the biggest risk out of driving: the driver.
