Brake Violations Responsible for One out of Every Six Truck Removed from Roads
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, or CVSA, released data from a study the organization conducted that focused on brake safety of large trucks and semis on Brake Safety Day. The results of the analysis performed by the CVSA should strike fear in motorists who share the roads with commercial vehicles.
The results of the study were generated after CVSA inspectors examined over 10,000 buses and commercial trucks in 45 of the 50 U.S. states, as well as Canada, show that one out of every six trucks and buses had to be pulled off of the road because of a brake problem. The inspectors found that sixteen percent (16%) of commercial trucks and buses had critical brake violations that forced the CVSA to order the vehicles out of service because these vehicles posed an immediate threat to public safety. More specifically, 1,667 out of the 10,358 inspections performed in the U.S. and Canada revealed the existence of a brake problem that was so severe inspectors took the vehicle off of the road. U.S. regulations indicate that 20% of the brakes on a large truck or bus that is inoperative and cannot stop the vehicle require the vehicle to be declared out of service.
The results of the CVSA’s analysis seem to suggest that there are many large trucks and buses on the road with brake systems in such poor condition that a massive collision seems inevitable. Truck drivers need to focus on arriving at destinations safely, even if that means taking a little extra time to inspect trucks a bit closer to avoid catastrophic crashes.
