Study On Deadly 18-Wheeler Tractor-Trailer Truck Accidents
A longitudinal study of truck accidents reveals several causes for deadly commercial vehicle and big-rig crashes. Over three years, researchers examined hundreds of large truck crashes in the United States to ascertain the reasons why these crashes occurred. Several trends emerged. Researchers were able to determine at which time of day a fatal truck accident was likely to happen, which road or highway in the country was the most dangerous for truck crashes and which behavior was the most frequently cited in fatal truck crashes. Across the three-year span, 11,000 fatal crashes were recorded in the United States that killed 12,230 motorists. Large trucks accounted for approximately 9% of every vehicle that was involved in a fatal crash in 2017 alone. Sixty-nine percent of the trucks involved were either tractor-trailer trucks, double-trailer trucks, or a straight truck pulling a trailer.
Further in-depth analysis revealed other disturbing statistics. Fatal crashes involving tractor-trailer trucks rose nearly 6% between 2016 and 2017 and fatal crashes involving trucks that were not part of a tractor-trailer tandem were up by almost 19%.
Overall, people in crashes are less likely to suffer deadly injuries if the crash occurred on Sunday. However, between 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. the largest number of fatal crashes occurred.
