Truck Driver Distraction Causes Deadly Collisions
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) found that a disturbing 71% of truck drivers involved in crashes were doing something other than focusing on driving the truck when a crash happened. The FMCSA warns drivers to pay close attention to the road.
The FMCSA published recommendations to help drivers of large trucks avoid collisions on the road. Federal studies show that approximately 11,000 truck crashes across the U.S. happened over three year timeframe because truck drivers allowed themselves to be distracted by something outside of their cab.
Not being distracted by a cell phone seems obvious when operating a vehicle that could weigh as much as 80,000 pounds. Despite the weight of the vehicle and extensive training, professional truck drivers often become distracted by their cell phones. A 2009 study found that text messaging while driving increased a driver's chances of being involved in a safety-critical event by 23 times. Even if hands-free devices are used, the driver’s attention is directed away from the road and the operation of the vehicle toward something else.
